To My Protesting Friends, You're Doing it Wrong (A How-To From A White Ally)

So, y'all, after the clusterfuck that was Trump winning the election there have been protests across the nation because people are angry and because PROTESTING is one of the most American things that you can do. But ... according to my Facebook feed ... y'all are doing it wrong.

And you are upsetting white people!

So, I have researched and I have some pointers on how to protest
so that WHITE AMERICA (you know, America, like how the Evangelical vote was for Trump, except for the Black Evangelical vote, which is historically liberal.)

Let's start with our words.

Realize first that white people voted for Trump because of God, Economics, The Second Amendment and Our Children. (Did y'all even realize that white women had abortions?)

If a white person says or does or promotes or elects something that is:

Fascist
Sexist
Racist
Ableist
Classist
Homophobic
Transphobic
Islamaphobic
Anti-Semitic or
Terrorist

Don't use those words to let them know. Actually ... Don't bring it up at all because those words are mean and white people are delicate with fragile feelings and letting us know that our behavior has a dangerous impact on people who are not white is bullying.

And white people are against bullying.

Unless you are a privileged, entitled, greedy, spoiled, braggy, white sexual predator ... and then, well,
that's just how men are, right ladies?

And if you are going to say anything about "Lives Mattering", then it needs to be ALL or BLUE.

Unless the person who killed the Blue Lives is a white, confederate-flag waving domestic terrorist. Then you need to concede that that guy is an aberration and a retard.

Speaking of which, if your child is participating in the protest, and they aren't normal, you know, they're special, then they need to be special in a way that doesn't make us uncomfortable or inconvenienced with their disability. I would recommend a verbal, attractive kid with Down Syndrome, like that girl that became a model, or that kid that got accepted to college. Maybe not so much the kids who the normal kids ask to prom. Because, they're okay when we want to admire our normal kids for giving up something important, but in person, we need a disability that we can see and feel good about ourselves for admiring that they can be almost like people, but not anything that we won't notice or will bring us down.

And speaking of broken, if you are going to have any veterans, they need to be maimed in some way.  And the more horrific, the better, because we need to look at them and imagine what they were like when they were normal. And we want to be able to point to them as examples of who we should be taking care of, if we had the money, because economics. And, of course the vet needs to be a man, because women aren't really veterans.

Speaking of men, let's address the biggest problem with these protests. They are too diverse. You need to gather healthy white men (25-40) who regularly make love to their guns. They need to take those guns to an overpass and threaten law enforcement. (Call Fox News, don't tell them that you are specifically protesting Trump.) Then, those white men and their friends and THEIR guns need to seize some sort of federal building. If they can damage property, even better! If that property is some sort of Native or minority artifact, you're gold! Entrench yourself there and promote sedition! But, whatever you do, do not take your snacks with you! That's sissy.  If you get peckish, demand your snacks like a man. Use this opportunity to lament the fact that we won't get taco trucks on every corner. We know this tactic works. America (you know, White America) approves of this method! Ask the Bundys.

(Some of you may wonder, could we use Native American men instead of white men? And I see your thinking there, as long as they didn't look too native or too white, but, no. White people will admire the mystic nobility of the Native American, but eh, seriously, they have casinos! AND they keep whining about mascots and won't let white people play with their pretty headdresses. As I have already discussed, that's bullying.)

There you go! Easy-peasy, right? I know you just needed a few little tips on how to protest so white people won't be uncomfortable. So, go fight the good fight, y'all!

So at the deepest depths of my despair, there was, unsurprisingly, anger. And writing while angry results in satire, which y'all know makes me uncomfortable. The thing about satire is that you just can't call anything satire and it be okay. There is a line between art and oppression, and I don't quite trust myself on that line yet. All of that written so that you know that if you have any critiques, I am open. (Unless you actually complain that this is mean to white people.)

Camp NaNoWriMo, or Let's Feed The Alligators

http://campnanowrimo.org/

So, I have also decided to sign up for Camp NaNoWriMo...in April...at the same time I am doing NaPoWriMo, because, maybe I hate myself? But I have only committed to 300 words a day (more my speed than 1200ish) and I am going to count my NaPo poems in my NaNo counts.

"Gator Walk Warning" photo by heidi helmer

I have also decided to work on my Novemeber NaNo novel called The Protector of Hartley.  I set it down in December because I realized something horrible about one of my characters and it kind of hurt my feelings. I have picked it back up and reread it in preparation for April and I have realized a few things.

1. That horrible thing is actually the truth.

2. That truth still hurts my feelings.

3. I am going to cry a few times writing that stupid story.

4. I should probably rename the book Profanity and Poop, because there is a lot of both. I really like writing about shit.

This should be interesting.

My Big News!!!!

Final Update: The contest is now closed. Congratulations to Bijan and Adrian for winning a Season Four Pass each. Thank you everyone who participated. :)

UPDATE: David Cummings of the very awesome No Sleep Podcast has generously donated  a SECOND Season Four Pass!!!!! So I have extended the giveaway by a week. Click on "A Rafflecopter giveaway" below and enter the contest, and while you're online, check out the Podcast, maybe even give it a high rating on your podcast server. Halloween in coming and this podcast will jump start the holiday for you. Thank you so much to the most excellent David Cummings for his generosity and wonderful work.

Hey y'all!

This summer, I had a horrible case of ringworm (that I think will become a scary story one day).  And I didn't feel like writing. Although I did teach myself to knit, weave, loom, and crochet and I worked on some embroidery. Since I was always online watching tutorials anyway, I decided to swing by reddit to see what was new on No Sleep. The first thing I noticed was that I had a message. When I checked it, I has a month old request from the No Sleep Podcast requesting PERMISSION TO RECORD PEGGY FOR A SHOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (you may so totally shout with glee here.) The whole reason that I finally wrote out Peggy and posted it to No Sleep was because I really wanted one of my stories on that podcast. I immediately wrote back and gave permission. The reply I received was that they thought the story had been abandoned and went ahead and recorded and posted it already. AAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My story was published on the third episode of Season Four on June 29. Since they didn't know who I was, they gave me the pseudonym Lisa Garfield, which is kind of stuck on the audio. My story is the fourth one which means that it is not one of the stories that you can listen to for free.  It is $1.49 per episode or $19.99 for the season pass. Since I love this podcast, and I am over the fucking moon about my story getting chosen I want to give away a Season Pass, so I have decided to host a giveaway using Rafflecopter. Sign up below and I will let Rafflecopter to chose a winner in a week. Once the winner is chosen, I will get in touch with that person and get the information necessary for their subscription.

a Rafflecopter giveaway

I'm not sure if this is necessary, but this is open to anyone who is 16 or older and lives in a place where they can receive a subscription. I have chosen to use Rafflecopter because most of my readers are my family and friends, who are allowed to participate. I am not receiving any compensation for running this give away, I just want to share the scary joy!

Please take time to check out the No Sleep Podcast and the No Sleep forum. This recent story is particularly terrifying!  With reddit, you really want to read the comments.

Thanks for sharing this with me, y'all.

More on Blogging

Once again, I have had a burst of writing followed by a long silence. And I realized some things about how I blog.

I like NaPoWriMo and it revs me up for writing. It feels like I could write and write and write everyday forever. And then something, usually depression, happens and I stop. I also stop reading and visiting other blogs, waiting for it to pass. [Although this time, it was a combination of feeling weird after participating in the blog hop (I'm not sure why) and a remarkably nasty, hardy, contagious, and itchy case of ringworm. That thing lasted for over two and a half months. >:-( ]

It's the not visiting my favorite blogs (and to a lesser extent replying to comments to my posts) that seems to get me in the most trouble. I begin to feel like I can't post until I have caught up in visits. And, at that point, blog reading becomes homework, and if I wanted to do homework, I would still be working on my PhD. I turn something I like into a duty, and that's not what I want. If I read and comment on 20  posts from the same blogger like a stalker binge-reading, I would rather it be because I am enjoying the writing and not because I feel obligated.

I may be the only person who blogs who feels compelled  to reciprocate out of duty, but I kind of doubt it. I have read the other occasional, "I-have-to-catch-up-on-reading-blogs" posts. So I have decided to liberate myself and the five of you (A,B,B,B,&B) who read and comment on the lasagna with regularity. Reciprocity is not a requirement here.  That felt good. Let me write that again.

Reciprocity is not a requirement here.

Even if I am visiting you via a community that encourages reciprocity. If I have been by and commented, please don't feel obligated to return the visit. That feeling of obligation reduces my pleasure in reading blogs and stokes my anxiety to the point where I can't write.  Fuck that shit, this is supposed to be fun y'all.

So, we are starting over with a clean slate. I am going to start profiling writing I like on Mondays via my Twitter and Facebook accounts again. #FridayFartPoems will also return to Twitter and Facebook. I'm ready to get back to writing. (And you may notice more bodies-are-gross poetry popping up.)

Finally, something super exciting happened this summer that I didn't find out about until a month later. I don't want to announce it at the moment, because I want this up for a couple of days to get some views.

Thanks for stopping by

Virtual Blog Tour

I was asked to participate in a virtual blog tour by the most awesome Susie Clevenger. The purpose of the blog tour is to introduce talented bloggers and learn about their creative process. Please go check out Susie's tour at Confessions of a Laundry Goddess.

Its goal is to introduce talented bloggers and have them share insight into their writing and creative process. You can visit her tour post at The Edge of Silence - See more at: http://confessionsofalaundrygoddess.blogspot.com/2014/05/virtual-blog-tour.html#sthash.MR4fkyV6.dpuf

  Susie Clevenger
Susie Clevenger is a Poet, Author, Blogger and Photographer.  Her debut book of poetry Dirt Road Dreams is available on Amazon and Susie is currently working on her second poetry collection, Insomnia's Ink.  To view her work visit Confessions Of A Laundry Goddess.

Unsurprisingly to the people who know me, I am late posting. I was supposed to have this posted Monday, but my sweetie had some unexpected time off...and I goofed a bit.  So, I am going to talk about my process a bit and then share some of my favorite bloggers.

 What am I working on?

When I am not trying to clean up my house or keep my sweetie-pies from eating glue, I like to write and take pictures. I have been experimenting with poetry inspired by haiga where I write poems directly onto pictures. I have also recently been introduced to scanner photography, which fascinates me. I have also been exploring selfies on Instagram (biggerthanalasagna). Because of all of this, I have become a huge fan of Pixlr Express

I currently have three short stories on the back burner that have me stuck (I miss writing short stories), and I am working on a series where each post is limited to 100 words.

How does my work differ from others in it's genre?

Hmmmm....I guess if you were to ask me what I wrote, my instinct would be to reply "Flash Fiction Horror." A cursory glance of any lasagna related social media, however, would reveal mostly confessionalist poetry and poems about my sweetie-pies, with the occasional pissed-off social commentary. And, where some of the poems about me are rather scary, I prefer monsters (lately, zombies). My poetry seems to differ from other poems in that I like to tell a story, and, right now, I'm not very interested in being poetical. I like the puzzle of the form and the quick release of a short poem.  Although, I'm always an advocate for alliteration!

Why do I write/create what I do?

I have no idea. Honestly.  I know that with some of my poetry, I write it because I think that if I don't get that feeling out of me it will slowly poison me.  Then again, some of my poetry is maybe a pretentious way of saying "Look how fucking cute my kids are!" I like writing that is unexpected and or surprising. The more surprising, the more I like it. The surprise tickles me. The photography and the audio recordings are mostly because it's fun.

How does your writing/creative process work?

Like I wrote earlier, sometimes I am just miserable and I need to get that out. Those are usually poems and they come out quickly and it's done. Sometimes, I just want to write or make something, and I will go to one of the awesome prompts online and see what happens. Sometimes, the idea comes and I am in a place where I can sit down and play with it.  I find that some sort of routine, like NaPoWriMo, helps and I get very writey if I commit to write something everyday. (She writes as she's late with this post :) )

So, that's me today. Let's get to three awesome bloggers that you will love, if you don't already! Next Monday-ish they will give their own blog tour, but you don't have to wait..go check them out today!

Talicha J.

Talicha J. is an American poet/spoken word artist, aspiring novelist, music producer and an avid reader (she is quite proud of her ability to read an entire trilogy in one week). In March she competed in her first national poetry competition, Women Of the World Poetry Slam, along with 71 other female poets. She came in 36 overall landing in the top fifty percent. Talicha J. also released her debut poetry album “In the making” on May 1st. She is excited about realizing her childhood dream of being a poet, although she could use a raise.

Yves K. Morrow

I am a 33 year old living in Sweden with my husband of 14 years and my 6 year old daughter. Mindlovemisery reflects the subjects most extensively explored in my poetry. Mind- philosophy, psychology, mental illness, society  Love- loss, unrequited, infatuations and obsessions, sex, true love, new love, relationships of all sorts both dysfunctional and sublime Misery- childhood trauma, Depression, the search for meaning, loneliness, spiritual dilemmas grief, social ineptitude etc.  I was a rather peculiar child (if you have read my poetry I am sure you can imagine!) and so I taught myself very early on to read and read everything I could get my hands on romance novels, text books, manuals, porn mags, newspapers, dictionaries, adult fiction, adult non fiction, biographies, mythology, fairy tales, cereal boxes if I could find it I would read it. Speaking of my peculiarities I used to visit strangers homes and listen to them talk for hours in an effort to better understand human nature (my own nature and feelings). I also used to go on horrendously long walks from dawn to dusk as a child. I didn't really start writing until it became increasingly part of my school curriculum, until then I acted out all the stories in my head. My first influences were Sylvia Plath, Arthur Rimbaud, and Oscar Wilde (though his influence is not seen so much in my work). Once I started writing I realized how intrinsic it was to my nature. Being devastatingly shy writing has given me a voice, a means of coherently expressing myself. In school I continued my vicious pursuit of the nature of man and studied psychology, philosophy, anatomy and physiology, nutrition, religion anything that had to do with the mind, body, or spirit.  Jim Carroll is another influence, though he came significantly later, his poetry has definitely shaped my work. Aside from poetry I am very physically active I dance, weight-lift, do yoga and Pilates, and various other types of cardiovascular activities.  I also paint, bake, watch an obscene amount of documentaries, medical programs, and biographies, enjoy the very occasional video game, and eat a lot hence the need for so much exercise!
That's Bone, on the left.
Bone

Bone was born some years ago, according to documents he obtained from a woman claiming to be his mother. He grew, in size and age, as many of his species are wont to do. He describes himself as a thinker of thoughts. For most of his life, he has been stricken with long bouts of little to no productivity. And he likes to eat donuts.

*I'm considering a prize for the person (not Bone) who can tell me how many times Bone gets me to edit this post.

An Open Thank You to Gay Reiser Cannon

Dear Gay,

For the April 10, 2014 dVerse Meeting the Bar post, you challenged us to create our own form. I created the Geburstag, which uses the writer's birthday to determine lines and either word or syllable count. In my comments, you wrote that it would also be a good ways to write poems for other people using their birthday. Your challenge and comment opened a whole new way of celebrating my friends for me. I have been using it for birthdays and to commemorate any other special day. (I don't know if my friends like it as much...) But it has been such a fun way for me to remember and reappreciate people who are important to me. I just wanted to thank you for the cool inspiration!

With Gratitude,

Housekeeping: Let's Catch Up

Hey y'all.

Happy February!

I have been away for a while. I am not a multitasker, so sometimes I have to live one thing at  a time. I have some plans this year for the Lasagna, and I am a little behind, but I am late for everything. So, here's what I have planned.

First of all, I have met some amazing people through their blogs and I want to share their work. I am going to add a post where I feature on of my favorite blogs/bloggers. I have decided to just put all the names in a hat and draw at random. I will contact the blogger before I post to get permission and let you read the blog post before I publish it.

Secondly, I am going to try to expand on my writing. I really enjoyed my short stories that I wrote for reddit and want to write more horror stories. I also received some nice feedback from my memoir piece about mayonnaise, so I want to try some more of that.

I also plan to participate with dVerse and other prompts, and I can't wait to try NaPoWriMo again. I have also liked the Word Porn page on Facebook, and it post a new word a day that I want to use as a poetry prompt. I am also going to get #FridayFartPoem to gain some popularity on Twitter.

Finally, if I meet about 70% of these goals, I will be ecstatic. I am so okay with average.

Thanks again for reading and your continuing support!

Some Thanks

Hey y'all!

So the reddit No Sleep contest is over, and Peggy got either nine or ten votes, which put her pretty solidly in the middle of the pack. I think that's a rather respectable showing. Thanks for everyone who voted for me and for your continued support of the lasagna. I have another story gestating right now that I'll post in a couple of months. I have to brush up on parasites and neuropsychology, so if anyone knows any "for dummies" books that address these two topics, let me know,

Thanks,

For Those of You Who Like a Scary Story

Hey y'all!

For all my American friends Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you have a great holiday.

This post is to let y'all know about the November contest at NoSleep over at reddit.  If you are interested in reading some scary stories check out this link http://www.reddit.com/r/NoSleepOOC/comments/1rfjv9/november_nosleep_official_contest_voting_thread/.

Here you will find sixteen stories entered for the contest. If you are signed on to reddit you may even vote for your favorite one. I have one that I especially like that has moved down to the bottom third of the list since this morning. (I think not such a good sign.) The brilliant author of this story would probably appreciate more than my one vote.  The contest starts today and lasts a week.

Thank you!

Prompts

I never really adjusted to summer break and now school's back in session. I have wanted to post, but I haven't felt very creative. So I thought that I would share links to prompts that I enjoy. Many of you visit through prompts and maybe familiar with these already, but there may be one or two nice finds. I also invite you to post a link to a prompt that I may have missed in the comments section. If you say it is okay, I will edit this post and move the link into the text. You can also email me with a link if you would rather. My email address is to the right.

Prompts:

Kellie Elmore's Free Write Friday
http://kellieelmore.com
Click on "The Latest" tab

Kellie's prompt was the first one I discovered. She posts prompts on Friday and invites you to free write. The prompts vary in type (picture, question, word bank, etc.) from week to week. You post the link to your blog in the comments.

dVerse Poets Pub
 http://dversepoets.com/

A very cool community. Tuesday they have an Open Link Night for poetry and Thursday and Saturday they post poetry challenges. Monday and Wednesday, they post an article and invite discussion in the comments.  There is so much to learn from this talented group. You link through Mr. Linky.

The Mag
http://magpietales.blogspot.com

You should visit this prompt if just to look at the pictures and stay for the cool posts. The Mag posts on Sunday and is a picture prompt. You respond to the posted picture on your blog and then post the link through Mr. Linky.

Three Word Wednesay
 http://www.threewordwednesday.com/
3WW posts three words and you write something that uses those words. This site has some very cool flash fiction participants. The prompt is posted on Wednesday and you link through Mr. Linky.

The Sunday Whirl
http://sundaywhirl.wordpress.com/

The Sunday Whirl is a word bank prompt. Each Sunday, you get a new Wordle of 12/13 words. You get your creativity on, and then link back through Mr. Linky

mindlovemisery
 http://mindlovemisery.wordpress.com/

This is a beautiful, intense blog with one of the most delightful bloggers that I have met through writing. Plus on Sunday, she posts a challenge and invites responses. You link up through a Mr. Linky.

Mad Kane's Humor Blog Limerick-Off
 http://www.madkane.com/humor_blog/category/limerick-offs/

I am not sure how I forgot to mention this wonderful weekly challenge when I first wrote this post, but I did. Let me offer my deepest apologies. Each week Madeleine Kane gives you the start and you write the limerick(s). If you are not sure about the form, she also has a helpful tutorial. The submissions are hilarious and the challenge is great fun. It is also not uncommon for limerick throw-downs to happen where submitters write limericks back and forth to each other.

Prompts I would like to try one day:

A Little Gratitude

A Little Gratitude

To all of the people who give a damn
to those who would offer their last bit of toast
to those who help people who are poverty stained
who understand we are all one big family
and that the unimportant things seduce
who work hard to integrate

the ones who have been disregarded, shamed: to integrate
the ones who have been shunned, oppressed, the damned
the ones who have who have been seduced
the ones who have had their inner self turned to toast
the ones who are bereft of any family
the ones who are adversity stained

Thank you for seeing more than just stained
and hopeless euphemisms, to integrate
the person back not using the label, but the family
name seeing more than just some mistake or some damn
illness, not some piece of discarded toast,
and not some vile fiend looking to seduce

innocence away from the young,  to seduce
values away from the land, to leave a stained
path of destruction in their wake, to toast
the good and to integrate
evil, destroy a family.

People are just people, one big family.
And we need to accept each other. Integrate
the idea that we are more than the potential damned.
We are all different, and each carefully stained
with our own unique beauty
our own positiveness that integrate
into our being, each of us deserving a toast.

We are all miracles, like a croissant left in the heat to toast
warm, flaky, tender, flawed, possible family
nourishment. So, to those who wish to integrate,
to enfold in a warm hug, not to seduce,
I want to thank you. To shake your hands that are stained
with your humanity. To those who run towards the damn

inferno, who toast in the flames to battle the seduction
Thank you for our family, for altering the stain.
Proving humanity's best integrated cry: We give a damn!

posted to dVerse Meeting the Bar: Unfathomable 4/18/13

Towards the end of February, I asked  my friends on Facebook to give me a word and then I would use those words as the end words of a sestina. They gave me the words, but, at that point, I no longer had a sestina in me. Then, at this week's dVerse Open Link Night, there was a link to Victoria Slotto's wonderful Transience-A Sestina. It got my sestina fires burning again, and so, early this morning, I wrote this sestina.

This afternoon, on dVerse Meeting the Bar: Unfathomable, Anna Elizabeth Graham wrote an interesting and insightful post about the poetry that comes from disaster or catastrophe. She prompted us to write a poem that comes from disaster or catastrophe  Even though this poem isn't about a large disaster specifically, I think it fits in with the prompt.

I want to thank Alicia Atchison Lemonier, Elizabeth Anne Sclater, Sarah Helmer, Kathy Hammonds, and Kristin Naccari for giving me the words to use! Y'all are the awesomest!

Almost Past My Block

I think my toastiness is fading. I was able to write a poem and I have been working on my latest Wordle, but it is slow coming. I decided to take this morning to catch up reading some links to prompts that I wished I had written for, but missed. I may still write for them and post here, but I think I have learned my lesson. I won't try to catch up, read and respond to other links, and respond to comments all in one Sunday (or Tuesday as the case may be.) I am also trying to figure out Chirbit because I think it may be fun to post me reading my stuff up here. So far, I can't get the little player to work here, although sometimes the link does, and sometimes it doesn't, and the Twitter link seems to work. If any of y'all are familiar with inserting Chirbit into a Blogger/Blogspot blog and have some helpful hints, please do share.

Hope y'all are having a great day!

Housekeeping

Happy Labor Day!

As you may have noticed, I have not been terribly disciplined this weekend. I am going to catch up tonight. I wanted to thank everyone for the 345 hits. Also thanks for the reactions, comments, and fb posts.  This has been a fun exercise so far. Please feel free to share this blog, and please feel free to offer comments and constructive criticisms. It is also okay to use the "what the hell" button, but let me know what are you questions. I noticed that my last housekeeping post has received more likes than some of my pieces, hhhmmmmmmm.

I also wanted to say that if you like fashion and/or aging, check out the "Advanced Style" blog. It's awesome!

Thanks again for reading! I hope you enjoy the following posts.

Housekeeping

Housekeeping is the title I will use whenever there is some extra info I want to pass along, or any updates to the workings of the lasagna. (which kind of sucks now because I really want to use that title for a story or a poem.)

1. I think I have updated the comments section so that anyone may comment, without having to register first.

2. I opted for "moderate comments" so I think that means they come to me before they are posted. I am interested in keeping all the spam for myself (so yummy on a sandwich).

3. I enabled the reactions section, so if you want to provide some 5 second feedback, I would appreciate it. I am also open to adding any reactions that may be more helpful, just let me know!

4. For those of you who are in Alabama, AIDS Alabama has advanced tickets for "Wicked" on sale, when it comes to Birmingham. They have really good seats and they benefit from the spots they can sell. I think there may only be two days left, though.

5. The last time I checked, I was up to 153 hits, and although I am pretty sure that I am 110 of those hits, I would like to thank those of you who contributed to the other 43. I hope no one was disappointed when they saw the title and the adult content warining, and yet there were nothing obviously bigger than a lasagna on the posts. It only just now occured to me that it may all be misleading. So, I offer my sincere apologies to anyone who was looking for something a little spicier.
