True Happiness in the Life of a Dog

The joy of rolling around in

dead things.
Such
was the greatest happiness in life
for my dear sweet dog, Emma.

Bath Time at My House

My kids are small enough that they enjoy

splashing together
in
their evening bath, although, I wish that they didn't
like splashing me outside the tub too!

Hope Is Dark

Alone in the darkness of hope.

Breathless
Scared
I fear the denial hope allows
Sometimes the truth is too hard

August Second is the Best Day

I'm in love with my birthday, August Second.

So much
so
I created a poetry form so everyone could celebrate
Der name ist deutsch, weil...German's cool!

written 4/10/14 for dVerse Meeting the Bar

Gay asked us to create a poetry form. I created Geburtstag, which Marina Sofia tells me is German for Birthday. It's easy. You write your birthday in numeral form month, day, year (yes that way because, I'm American). Each numeral becomes the number of syllables or words that you use for that line. If it's a zero, you skip the line. It may not be the most fun form for those born January 1, 2000, but it may be more challenging. Y'all know I like the short form. (and I don't get meter)

Be sure to swing by dVerse and read the other cool, new forms.

  2. I like this - we can use your birthday, our own, or even better use that for birthday poems using that person's birthday. V. cool. I like that you can plug in either words or syllables too. All of these were very cool and very clever! Thank you.

    1. Thank you Gay! I loved this prompt. Also, I apologize for renaming you "Gail" I have corrected that. The funny thing is that yesterday was my aunt's birthday and, if I have been thinking, I would have written one for her for the post. :)

  3. Excellent poems, I relate to the kids in the bath, always needed a spare towel to dry myself off as well as them.

  4. Very clever verses here. Ha, I have dogs -- so I know what you mean. And what greater joy for kids than splashing in (and out of) the tub!!

  5. A very clever idea...and it is self-individualizing depending on your birthday. Very cool!

  6. I think this works very well with your scenes of domesticity, with a nice dash of humour. (I know that kind of bath-time all too well!)
P.S. 'Geburtstag' is the name for birthday in German, by the way, as I'm sure Claudia could tell us if she were online.

    1. Hi Bjorn! Thank you. I thought it was fun! I also think it would work for Twitter micropoetry.

  10. I like this creation...and lucky for me my birthday is not 01-01-2000...I'm with you on the meter thing; I can do it if I have to, but don't really care much for it.

the first two verses definitely made me laugh.

  11. Wonderful! Your "True Happiness in the Life of a Dog" is exquisitely true. Somehow, it reminds me the character of Percy, Mary Oliver's adorable pup. Smiles. Simply layered to eyes, effectively powerful when read. Thanks for sharing!

  12. Terrific idea. Is it OK if I do it the European way day/month/year? that way I don't get any gap lines. A possible variant could be to count metric feet (beats) instead of syllables or words

    1. Hey Viv! Thank you! I think any modifications you make to the form are fine, because, hey, it's your geburstag! Get busy! Have a party! :) (I promise to not insert metric system joke about meter here.)

Hi! Thank you for the visit! Grab a plate and a sweet tea and let's dig in. It may take a while, but I always try to reply and return visits.
