Nightmares
Sometimes they
play scary movies on my wall.
Sometimes they
touch my cheek as I am falling asleep.
Sometimes they
make creaking noises that only I can hear.
Sometimes they
whisper horrible things.
Sometimes they
keep me awake almost all night.
Sometimes they
threaten to carry me away.
Sometimes they
laugh when I cry for Mommy...
but not always.

Hey y'all. We had a very nice spring break but I am now way rusty and NaPoWriMo snuck up on me. This is my first time participating and I think that this is not quite finished but it is a start. The prompt was to use a first line from another poem. I tried to write one with the first line from Dreadful by Shel Silverstein but, I kept reciting it in my head, so I went to The Writer's Almanac. I used the first line from The Neighbors by Jack Ridl. I hope I can do a poem a day...you may see a lot of cinquains. I'll catch up with reading comments and responding as the week progresses. Thanks for stopping by!

oh heck...those monsters can get so real for a child.. that they laugh when you call for mom hit me most here..
ReplyDeleteI was terrified of the dark when I was little and my monsters would mock me, so there are some autobiographical elements in here. I still can't watch "The Island of Doctor Moreau", which exponentially escalated my fears when I was young. Thanks for stopping by.
DeleteThose nightmares are real for the child ~ Enjoyed the read as well ~
ReplyDeleteHi Grace! They can be too real. Thank you for stopping by. I am happy that you enjoyed it.
DeleteI am an adult and I still use a night light..I am frightened of pitch black....there are no street lights in the country and you cannot see your hand in front of your face.
ReplyDeleteHi Cressida! That must make for awesome stargazing, but I think I would only be able to sleep during the daytime. I sleep listening to old radio mysteries which quiet the monsters caused by serotonin and adrenaline but it backfires occasionally when an episode of Lights Out or Inner Sanctum or Quiet, Please plays and gives me a noir nightmare. Thanks for visiting again.
